Understanding IBS
IBS is also known as spastic colon, colitis, or nervous stomach. Symptoms range in severity from an occasional mild episode to a debilitating, life-altering illness that prevents the individual from working or functioning normally.
The symptoms are exacerbated by stress, changes in diet, and changes in daily routine, among many other things.
Medically, the causes of IBS are unknown, so traditional treatment — effective only about 25% of the time — consists of fiber therapy, antispasmodic medications, and antidepressants. In these cases, antidepressants function on the nervous system of the gut to reduce its sensitivity to pain rather than acting as emotional antidepressants.
Adriane Fugh-Berman, MD, chair of the National Women's Health Network in Washington, D.C., says that hypnosis should be the treatment of choice for severe cases of IBS.

Our program is a modified version of research by gastroenterologist P.J. Whorwell, MD (Manchester, England) and Dr. Olafur Palsson (Eastern Virginia Medical Center) — two of the world's leading IBS hypnotherapy researchers.
Clients come for about eight to ten sessions, typically spaced two weeks apart. Since IBS symptoms fluctuate, results must be evaluated over a longer period of time.
After each session, clients receive a CD and are instructed to play the recording daily until the next session. All suggestions and imagery are "gut specific."
All hypnotherapy suggestions incorporate information on how a normal gastrointestinal system functions, retraining the gut-brain connection at the unconscious level.
At the final session, clients are taught self-hypnosis techniques and provided a maintenance CD — enabling them to sustain improvements for years after sessions end.
Many clients report symptom relief after one to two sessions. However, clients following the multi-session approach have maintained their symptom improvements for years after the sessions ended. What Whorwell and Palsson both found: the greater the number of sessions, the longer lasting the relief.
